Masks are part of a long traditional history in Africa in general. For the Bamiléké people they are symbols of various aspects of life, spirituality, and social organization.

During funeral ceremonies, they are worn during dances and installed in the area. Masks and statuettes are often used to represent ancestors' spirits and gods.

Masks may be made of wood, clay, fiber, ivory, bronze, beads, fabric and combinations of these materials.
