During funerals, the family often goes to sacred locations to pray and consult with supernatural spirits. These spirits are gods. Different gods have different purposes and constituencies. There are specific spirits or gods that protect a family and those who protect a community. Community and individual family spirits may both be called upon to protect someone who has died during a funeral. These beliefs are considered Animism. It is the belief that there is a spirit in some natural things and the worship of those spirits which are thought to continue after death and have the power to give protection. Worship
of these spirits occurs in sacred places in nature such as rivers, waterfalls,
mountains, swamps, trees, large stones, caves, etc.. Offerings are brought
to the gods in these locations. |
