It
is difficult to understand Bamiléké funerals without understanding
the rules governing when they may occur. The rules are based on the
Bamiléké calendar, seasons and ceremonial sequence.
Bamiléké
Calendar
The calendar is aligned with the secret societies and ceremonial customs.
The Bamiléké respect an eight day week based on the lunar
calendar. Each day corresponds with the meetings of certain groups. There
are rules associated with each day. There is a day designated as market
day, one when no farming is allowed and days when funeral ceremonies may
occur.
Seasons
Funeral
ceremonies happen primarily during the dry season, from November to February.
